A dynamic scene depicting three Crow warriors fording a river on horseback as part of a war party — a subject Terpning is celebrated for rendering with unmatched authenticity and energy. The lead rider's lance, the splash of water around the horses' legs, and the eroded riverbank bluffs in the background all showcase Terpning's extraordinary command of light, movement, and ethnographic detail. The textured canvas surface gives the piece the dimensional quality and presence of an original painting.
Professionally framed in a substantial rustic Western-style frame with burl-textured finish and dark inner liner. Brass title plaque reading "Crossing at the Ford — Howard Terpning" is affixed to the lower rail. Edition is sold out at publisher.
Howard Terpning is an Emeritus member of the Cowboy Artists of America with over forty awards from that organization, and a recipient of the Prix de West, the Hubbard Art Award for Excellence, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Autry National Center. His original oils have sold for nearly $2 million at auction.
