The stone slab top formed of polished zhenzhu stone, a conglomerate limestone extracted from Lake Tai in Jiangsu province. Speckled with painterly daubs of grey and blue-green color, the sought-after stone has been prized by scholar-artists for centuries, earning a favored place within the scholars' studio as a calligraphy surface or scholars' rock.

For use as a coffee table, the zhenzhu stone is paired with three sculptural legs of power-carved red cedar. A local Chicago artisan carves each leg from a solid block of wood, using handheld tools to create unique, contoured forms that perfectly balance the expansive stone top. The oblong legs add visual intrigue to the table's silhouette, clustered like a grove of trees or the pillars of a courtyard loggia.

This sculptural table consists of four separate pieces. The stone top is not affixed to the wooden legs and its heavy weight keeps it stable. The stone top weighs approximately 410 lbs. See less
