Stunning 1800's Monumental, French Rena. Revival, Carved, Mirrored 96” Armoire!!
Antique Armoire, Monumental, French Renaissance Revival, Carved, Mirrored, Figural, 96”, 1800's, 19th Century!!
Offered here is a monumental 19th century French Renaissance Revival carved armoire of exceptional scale and architectural presence.
Standing approximately 96 inches tall, this cabinet exemplifies the French Renaissance Revival movement that flourished during the Second Empire and late 19th century. During this period, French cabinetmakers looked back to the grandeur of the 16th-century Loire Valley châteaux and court furniture of Francis I and Henry II, reviving bold architectural forms, figural carving, classical ornament, and rich surface decoration for affluent urban interiors.
This example features a stepped cornice above a deeply carved and parcel-gilt frieze adorned with scrolling foliate ornament and classical motifs. The dual mirrored doors are framed by intricate Renaissance-inspired carving and flanked by projecting half-figure carvings terminating in expressive mask elements — sculptural devices directly inspired by 16th-century French and Italian prototypes.
The lower case continues the carved and parcel-gilt decoration with gadrooned trim and scrolling ornament, rising on substantial carved paw feet, reinforcing the cabinet’s architectural weight and theatrical presence.
Interior examination reveals hand-cut dovetail joinery, thick secondary boards, and aged hardware consistent with 19th century craftsmanship. The construction and materials support a dating to circa 1860–1890.
