Vintage mid-20th century oil painting titled “Homeward Bound,” depicting a pastoral countryside scene with a farmer guiding a carabao (water buffalo) cart along a path beneath a glowing sunset sky. Warm tones of orange, gold, and violet create a striking atmospheric landscape, while expressive brushwork adds depth and movement.
The painting is signed J. Tinsay (Jose Tinsay) in the lower right and executed in oil on an artist’s panel produced by M. Grumbacher. The reverse retains the original handwritten label with the title and original price of $150 (equivalent to $1500-1700 today!), suggesting it was likely sold through an artist studio or gallery.
Presented in a vintage wood frame with linen liner, which complements the warm tones of the painting beautifully. A wonderful statement piece for interiors ranging from rustic and traditional to eclectic or tropical-inspired spaces.
On José Tinsay: he was a respected Filipino painter known for his portraiture and genre scenes depicting life in the Philippines. Working from the 1920s through the 1950s, Tinsay earned recognition primarily for his portrait paintings of notable individuals and formal subjects, while his landscape compositions—often portraying rural villages, carabao carts, and countryside journeys—are encountered less frequently. These rare paintings capture the atmosphere and rhythms of provincial life through warm tropical palettes and expressive brushwork.
In addition to his artistic career, Tinsay was also known as an accomplished commercial aviator, a distinction that further contributed to his reputation in his native Philippines. Today, his work appears in auction records and private collections and is appreciated by collectors of Southeast Asian and Philippine art.
