In Japanese mythology, Hotei or the Laughing Buddha is one of the seven lucky Gods (Shichifukujin) and he represents happiness and abundance. As in this painting, Hotei is often depicted with a fan (Oogi or Uchiwa), which signifies his authority and the ability to grant wishes. Furthermore, Hotei is often depicted with a “Karako” child (with unique hairstyles and cheerful expressions), which represent good fortune for the family.

This painting has been recovered (cut) from an antique scroll, folding screen, fusuma door or album leaf and has been newly framed.

CONDITION: Good condition for age. Please note that antique and vintage artworks may have traces of time, stains and creases due to age, so please review all photos.
