An impressive 18th century French provincial walnut buffet à deux corps crafted in the Renaissance tradition, circa 1760.
This two-part cabinet features richly carved architectural elements including fluted columns, decorative capitals, paneled doors, and a striking frieze adorned with carved winged cherub heads. The projecting cornice and deeply carved ornament reflect the enduring influence of the Henri II Renaissance style that remained popular in provincial French furniture well into the 18th century.
The cabinet retains its original configuration with an upper display cupboard over a lower storage section, separated by a row of drawers traditionally used for linens or cutlery. Interior construction reveals hand-cut dovetails, wide plank boards, and hand-forged fasteners consistent with pre-industrial cabinetmaking techniques.
Crafted in solid walnut with pine secondary woods, the piece displays beautiful natural patina developed over more than two centuries. The warm tone of the wood and the depth of the carving give the cabinet strong architectural presence while remaining manageable in scale.
At 62 inches wide, this example is slightly narrower than many French buffets of this type, making it particularly versatile for modern interiors.
A striking and authentic 18th century storage piece suitable for dining rooms, libraries, or entry spaces.
