"Afternoon Shade"
In Texas, the cattle rest in the shade of the Mesquite trees in the heat of the day. This plein air painting depicts a quiet, sunlit scene with a loose, impressionistic style. In the foreground, a small group of Longhorns rest and graze in a grassy clearing. Their forms are suggested rather than sharply defined, as they blend into the surrounding landscape, depicted in colorful brushstrokes and lively summer shades of blues, yellows and greens.
The painting is further enhanced by its distinctive frame, which features rustic wood, leather-like textures, and cowhide patterns, reinforcing a Western or ranch-inspired aesthetic that complements the subject matter.
Lorie Batson~ is a highly accomplished oil and pastel artist, celebrated for her ability to capture the spirit of the West. She is a member of the Plein Air Artists of New Mexico, a signature member of the Plein Air Artists of Colorado and a proud member of The Cowgirl Artists of America. Her work beautifully portrays outdoor scenes with rich authenticity and depth.
“Afternoon Shade” is set in a richly textured frame of reclaimed barn wood, layered with cowhide and hand-tooled leather. A vintage lariat frames Lorie's painting, while carefully placed leather with metal studs add a rugged, timeworn character. Each element comes together to echo the quiet strength and natural beauty of the West, making this piece truly one of a kind.

I love working with Lorie Batson who is an amazing local artist of Westcliffe, Co. Together we create beautiful, art work and bring our creative visions together.
Being able to frame Lorie's artwork and add my own creative touch has been such an amazing experience. Together, we’re not just creating beautiful pieces—we’re blending our styles and the spirit of our Westcliffe community.
Flying Lead Designs~ in the workshop, I’ve been crafting unique, one-of-a-kind frames that elevate each piece of art. My passion for repurposing and sustainability leads me on adventures and hunting for vintage treasurers, gathering Western belts, belt buckles, conchos, cowhide and barn wood —all of which come together in distinctive, handcrafted frames. These designs merge Western charm, craftsmanship, and eco-conscious creativity.
