An exceptional and rare set of six authentic 19th-century French Louis XVI side chairs. These chairs feature elegantly carved giltwood frames with classic Neoclassical details, including fluted, tapered legs topped with floral rosettes and arched shield backs.
This set offers a striking "faded grandeur" aesthetic, blending the historic elegance of the French monarchy with a moody, sophisticated edge. Unlike many antiques of this age, these chairs feature exceptionally sturdy, well-cushioned seats that remain firm and supportive for dining. (One chair in need of restoration, a straightforward doable repair for a professional restorer or skilled hobbyist.)
The frames retain their original hand-applied gold leaf over gesso, showing a heavy, authentic patina with the warm reddish-clay bolus and natural wood grain peeking through. They are upholstered in a supple black leather, finished with traditional brass nailhead trim.

The sixth chair requires professional restoration; it has a vertical crack in the back stile and the back frame has loosened from the seat joinery. This chair should be repaired before being leaned upon. * Seating: All seats have been previously reupholstered in a high-quality black leather. They are remarkably solid and well-padded. The black leather is intact on all chairs but shows universal surface scuffing and light scratches consistent with age. * Finish: Extensive "shabby chic" wear to the giltwood and gesso throughout. There is significant flaking and loss of gold leaf, which highlights the set's 19th-century origins. * Hardware: One chair is missing a single brass nailhead along the lower trim less
