This large ceremonial or decorative mask is a fine example of traditional Balinese (Indonesia) craftsmanship from the 20th century.

Subject and Style: The work depicts the face of a female deity or noble princess, most likely Dewi Sita (Rama's consort in the Hindu epics) or a royal Legong dancer. The facial features are defined in the "halus" (refined and noble) style, with a pale complexion symbolizing purity, red lips, and large, expressive eyes. The head is adorned with an imposing and spectacular crown headdress (or tiara) richly carved with floral motifs in relief.

Material and Finish: The mask is hand-carved from a single, solid block of tropical wood with great skill and depth. The surface is painted in polychrome using traditional local colors (red, black, and creamy white) and embellished with gold finishes and details that enhance its volumes under the light.
