Part of a remarkable collection of artworks that never saw the light of day, this piece was originally intended for a major exhibition in the early 1980s. Unfortunately, after a dispute with the gallery, the exhibition was canceled, and the entire collection remained in storage, until now. Recently, the family made the decision to sell these long-lost works, finally allowing them to be appreciated as they were meant to be. Among this collection, this painting stands out as one of the finest. Measuring an impressive 150 x 150 cm, its sheer size commands attention. Van de Walle’s work is closely related to the Zero movement, with a minimalist black-and-white palette that allows it to seamlessly integrate into any modern home or interior. At first glance, the painting appears deceptively simple, but closer inspection reveals the immense skill required to create a piece that feels both controlled and spontaneous. Achieving this balance is no small feat, making this artwork not just visually striking but also technically masterful. Executed in black acrylic on canvas with a brush, its neutral tones contribute to its timeless elegance. A unique detail is the cross-stapled canvas on the back of the wooden frame, a testament to the artist’s visionary approach. This collection marks the final series Van de Walle painted before he had to stop due to health issues. Fred van de Walle (Frederik Willem van de Walle) studied at the Vrije Academie in The Hague from 1960 to 1963 and was a student of Willy Fleur. He was known for his abstract paintings, lithographs, and sculptures. Though his name remains relatively obscure due to the unfortunate circumstances that kept his best work from being exhibited in major galleries, his art remains highly sought-after.
