A work of folk art of extraordinary expressive power and rare to find, especially in this imposing size. This magnificent majolica terracotta mask is an authentic piece of early 20th-century Calabrian folklore, worthy of an ethno-anthropological museum.
Subject and Style: The work depicts a grotesque male face, likely that of a bandit or an elderly peasant, characterized by pronounced facial features, a thick dark beard, and the inevitable wooden pipe in his mouth. He wears the typical soft-brimmed hat (coppola) glazed in green. Historical Notes: In the past, these masks were not simple decorations, but powerful apotropaic talismans. They were affixed to the keystones of doorways, balconies, or inside homes with the specific purpose of frightening and chasing away evil spirits and protecting the home from the "Evil Eye" and "Blessings," acting as domestic guardians.
Material and Finish: The sculpture is made of heavy, hand-molded terracotta, covered with a rich luster glaze that adds depth to the earthy, vibrant colors typical of the Southern Italian ceramic tradition. The unglazed back shows the authenticity of the craftsmanship and the texture of the clay.
