Oil on cardboard - Landscape of the Emilian countryside in the rain
Date: Early 20th century
Provenance: Emilia-Romagna, Italy
We present a striking large-scale painting depicting an autumnal Emilian landscape with a decadentist flavor. Probably created around the 1930s, it is attributed to Garzia Fioresi (alias Alfredo Grandi, Vigevano 1888 – Bologna 1968), whose dense, textured brushwork and choice of subject are recognizable. Similarities to “La strada di Pizzo Calvo” sold by Sant’Agostino Aste, “Paesaggio con figure” and “Contadine al lavoro” from Gregory’s, “Untitled” sold by Capitolium Art, “River Landscape” sold by Arcadia, “Landscape” viewable on MutualArt, and “Landscape with Trees” from the Bologna History and Memory Committee.
The horizontal format, the oil-on-cardboard technique, and the dimensions correspond to numerous other landscapes from the 1920s and 1930s. Fioresi, in fact, produced many similar landscapes as part of an almost obsessive exploration of nature; the painting possesses remarkable power, organized within the vast mass of trees, simple and majestic in its disarming truth. The painting could be dated to the early 1930s, when the artist abandoned portraits and still lifes to paint landscapes characterized by a dense, textured brushstroke, perhaps following the famous series of views of the Tenimenti della Mesola commissioned by the Società Bonifiche Terreni Ferraresi (1926–27).
The piece would be well-suited to enhance a living room or bedroom, even one in a contemporary style.
Dimensions: 68x88 (50x70).
