This piece was painted from life, it was a study of a tall Amish horse done at a Plein Air art event in Westcliffe, CO. I was attracted to the contrast of the dark horse with the vibrant green and yellow foliage behind him. I love how Angela(Flying Lead designs) framed this painting with pieces of leather horse harness and turquoise to complement the piece.

“16 Hands” is mounted on repurposed reclaimed wood flooring, finished with a walnut stain and a hint of distressed blue that beautifully echoes the blues within the painting. A vintage tooled Western harness frames the artwork, secured with horseshoe nails and accented with turquoise studs that complement the tones of the piece. Original tarnished buckles and a concho add authentic character, creating a truly unique Western-inspired frame.

My passion for repurposing and sustainability leads me on adventures hunting for vintage treasurers, gathering Western belts, belt buckles, conchos, cowhide and barn wood —all of which come together in distinctive, handcrafted frames. These designs merge Western charm, craftsmanship, and eco-conscious creativity.
