John Stuart, Inc. was an American furniture company in Grand Rapids Michigan from 1948 to 1956. John Stuart, an English-born furniture designer who had been in the industry since 1913, was hired by the John Widdicomb Company in the early 1940s.  By then, Stuart had formed John Stuart, Inc. The company produced high end Eurpoean reproductions as well as Modern residential furniture. The furniture was often characterized by its clean lines, minimalist design, and use of high-quality materials such as walnut, mahogany and teak. Their furniture was highly sought-after by interior designers and architects during the mid-20th century, and many of their designs have become iconic examples of mid-century modern furniture. In 1956, the business was sold to John Widdicomb Company who continued to sell the line under the John Stuart name. See less
