Impressive painting depicting Christ on the Cross by the Franco-Spanish artist Vincent Gonzalez (1928–2019).
This unique work stands out for its powerful and expressive composition. The figure of Christ, rendered in a very free and almost expressionist style, emerges against a dark background with deep shades of green, black, and violet. The interplay of texture and light enhances the dramatic and spiritual dimension of the scene.
The body of Christ, painted in luminous tones leaning toward green and ivory, appears to emerge from the darkness, creating a striking contrast and a strong visual presence.
The work reflects the highly personal approach of Vincent Gonzalez, a Franco-Spanish artist whose painting is characterized by great gestural freedom and a search for emotional intensity.
Thanks to its large scale and expressive power, this painting is a major decorative piece, ideal for a contemporary interior, a modern art collection, or an architectural space.
Unique work.
This piece was acquired directly from the artist’s estate.
Frame: original aluminum frame.
Good overall condition.
Artist biography
Vincent GONZALEZ was born in 1928 in Spain, in Linares, a town in northern Andalusia in the province of Jaén.
The life of young Vincent was turned upside down by the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. He was seven years old when his father, who administered the town of Linares, was arrested in the street and then executed along with Vincent’s older brother by Franco’s soldiers.
Vincent and his five-year-old sister were then placed by their mother on a train bound for France. They arrived in Lyon a few days later as very young orphans, without family, unable to speak French, and knowing no one.
France had mobilized to welcome the victims of the war, and solidarity networks quickly formed, particularly in Lyon. The brother and sister were taken in by a Lyon family, the Leseigne family, where they found a home and affection.
Vincent learned cabinetmaking and painting, and his talent was quickly noticed. He later worked in the Guillotière district of Lyon. This became his profession: he worked independently but also collaborated with renowned cabinetmakers and decorators from Lyon.
It was in cabinetmaking and marquetry that Vincent Gonzalez fully revealed his artistic talent. Each unique piece was the result of meticulous craftsmanship, every detail demonstrating his exceptional mastery and skill. The sculpted handles carved from solid wood and the virtuosity of his marquetry work testify to the genius of this remarkable wood artist.
He reserved sculpture and painting mostly for his private life, and his modesty prevented him from widely exhibiting his work.
His stone sculptures reveal the delicacy of his carving, his poetic sensibility, and his ability to create deeply moving forms. His pictorial works, both sacred and literary, illustrate his broad cultural background, his love of color and drawing, and once again his remarkable technical mastery.
Vincent was married to Denise for 70 years. Together they built a house for which he created all the furniture and fittings himself.
Over the years, Vincent Gonzalez developed a network of clients in Lyon for whom he produced numerous pieces of furniture.
After the death of his wife, Vincent Gonzalez gradually declined and passed away two years later, in 2019. This piece has an attribution mark,
