This 1985 original oil painting by American artist Harley Francis (1940–2017) serves as a vibrant window into the artist’s mid-career exploration of light and the human form. A sophisticated riff on the Fauvist traditions of Henri Matisse, the composition utilizes a "window-within-a-window" perspective to create a dreamlike, voyeuristic narrative.
The work is a quintessential example of Francis’s "Terra Candella" (Land of Light) aesthetic—a personal philosophy where he used searing, expressive palettes to capture the emotional intensity of a sun-drenched environment. Here, a back-turned male figure gazes from a structured interior toward a brilliant coastal vista, framed by lush botanical greens and bold architectural stripes.
A defining feature of this piece is the original wood frame, hand-crafted and finished by the artist himself, ensuring the presentation remains exactly as Francis intended. Signed and dated "6.1.85 Harley" in the upper left corner, this painting is an exceptional find for collectors of 1980s American postmodernism and those seeking a painting with historical resonance.
About the Artist: Harley Francis (1940–2017)
Harley Francis was a prolific American painter, mail artist, and "artistamp" pioneer whose work is defined by an unwavering devotion to the "vocation of art." Born in New Albany, Indiana, Francis studied at Indiana University and Oberlin College, eventually settling into a celebrated studio practice in Oberlin, Ohio, and later California.
Throughout his 50-year career, Francis became a central figure in the international Mail Art movement, which led to the inclusion of his work in a landmark 1979 exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). He was a master of many mediums, from large-scale oil paintings to ceramics and collage, often hand-finishing his own frames to ensure each piece was a complete, singular object.
The State of Terra Candella
In 1978, Francis established Terra Candella (The Land of Light)—a personal "independent state" that served as the philosophical umbrella for his creative output. As the self-appointed "Postmaster" and resident ruler of this conceptual land, Francis viewed his paintings as artifacts from a world governed by light, color, and myth. His work often features a recurring cast of "unicorns," "furies," and "voyeurs," blending classical art history with a vibrant, postmodern sensibility.
Today, Harley Francis is recognized as a significant rediscovered artist of the late 20th century. His massive archive is held at the Clarence Ward Art Library at Oberlin College, and his paintings are increasingly featured in high-end galleries and curated collections worldwide.
