This antique copperplate engraved map titled “Der Mitternächtige theil dess alten Teutschlandts” and “Partie Septentrionale de L’Ancienne Germanie” depicts Scandinavia and the northern regions of Europe as understood through classical antiquity. First published in Paris around 1683 in Alain Manesson Mallet’s influential geographical work de l’Univers, the map reflects the 17th-century scholarly effort to visualize ancient historical geography using early modern cartographic methods. Rather than presenting contemporary political borders, the engraving illustrates Northern Europe according to classical sources, identifying regions through ancient tribal and ethnographic names. The Scandinavian peninsula dominates the composition, with territories corresponding to modern Norway, Sweden, and Finland rendered within the framework of “Ancient Germany” as interpreted by early historians and geographers. The Baltic Sea forms a central geographic feature, labeled alongside period terminology such as Mer Européenne (European Sea) and Vraye Germanie (True Germany), emphasizing the historical worldview of the time. Mallet, a French engineer, mathematician, and royal cartographer, produced de l’Univers as one of the most widely circulated geographical works of the late 17th century. His maps were designed to educate as well as inform, combining concise geographic representation with accessible visual clarity. This example demonstrates his characteristic style: bold engraved lettering, simplified yet expressive coastlines, and decorative hand-colored outlines that define regions while maintaining readability. Printed from a copperplate on laid paper and finished with original hand coloring, the map embodies the transition between Renaissance historical geography and Enlightenment scientific cartography. The sheet offers both historical significance and strong decorative presence, appealing to collectors interested in early interpretations of Scandinavia, classical geography, or 17th-century French cartographic publishing. Condition: Good condition consistent with age. General age-related toning and light surface wear. Minor marginal irregularities and small handling marks from former binding visible at edges. Colors remain clear and attractive. Please study images carefully. Framing tips: Particularly effective in a dark walnut or ebonized frame with a warm ivory mat to highlight the hand-colored borders and engraved typography. A generous mat margin enhances its scholarly character and works well in both classic and contemporary interiors.
