The trunk has been later recovered but retains an attractive surface patina consistent with age and use. An unusual and characterful piece, suitable for use as a footlocker at the end of a bed or as practical storage within an interior.

The curved form helped shed rain, preventing water from pooling on the lid and seeping into the interior. It also made the trunk structurally stronger, as a curved surface resists impact and pressure better than a flat one; important given the rough roads and constant vibration of long-distance travel. Cylindrical trunks were typically strapped to the roof of a coach, and the rounded shape reduced wind resistance and the risk of damage from low branches or debris.

In addition, the form was influenced by naval and military baggage, where rounded chests and cases had long been used for durability. By the late 18th and early 19th centuries, as roads improved and travel habits changed, flatter trunks became more common, but the cylindrical coach trunk remains closely associated with early long-distance travel.
