This striking trio of hand-painted Demon Masks represents a rare opportunity to own a curated set of performance artifacts from the 2007 Broadway Asia touring production of The King and I. Designed by Academy Award-winning visionary Tim Yip (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), these masks showcase his signature "New Orientalism" aesthetic, blending traditional Thai Khon motifs with bold, theatrical expressionism. This matched set of three offers a complete "gallery wall" narrative, perfect for a high-end interior design project or a serious archive of world-stage memorabilia.
Each mask is meticulously crafted from traditional hand-layered paper-mâché, finished with vibrant hand-painted details and the "theatrical patina" earned through a rigorous international tour. These measure 9.75" tall x 6.5" wide. As documented artifacts from the Fullerton Civic Light Opera (FCLO) archive, who aquired the masks after the Broadway run concluded. these masks carry the professional provenance and "stage-worn" character that distinguish authentic production pieces from modern replicas. Visible wear and minor surface variations are original to the performance history, serving as an authentic fingerprint of their time on the world stage. Whether displayed as a symmetrical triptych or as part of a larger collection, this Tim Yip trio serves as a powerful intersection of fine art sculpture and Broadway history.
These artifacts are part of a premier private collection of Tim Yip's 'The King and I' archive. Please view my other listings to see additional screen-matched hero masks and royal headpieces from this historic 2007 production.
OVERALL CONDITION: VERY GOOD – PRODUCTION-WORN
This trio of masks exhibits a high level of structural integrity and authentic "theatrical patina" consistent with professional use in a major international touring production. All wear is original to the 2007 tour and serves as a verified fingerprint of the items' performance history.
INTERNAL ARCHIVAL DETAILS:
Archival Tagging: Each mask retains its original FCLO (Fullerton Civic Light Opera) internal identification sticker. These tags are in excellent condition, with clear, legible handwritten notations identifying the production ("K & I"), the role ("Guard Mask"), and their sequential inventory numbers (1 of 5, 4 of 5, and 5 of 5). This trio represents a significant portion of the original production run, featuring masks numbered 1, 4, and 5 of only five created for the Guard ensemble. The interior of mask #5 even retains its original performer identification ("Simon"), providing a direct connection to the 2007 Broadway Asia cast. This level of granular documentation—maintained by the Fullerton Civic Light Opera (FCLO) archive—ensures these are not only beautiful sculptures but verified primary production artifacts.
COLLECTOR'S NOTE:
These masks are presented in their original, un-restored state. To maintain their archival value and Tim Yip design pedigree, we have not attempted to repair the surface patina. They are ready for museum-grade mounting or gallery display.
