This breathtaking, hand-crafted Royal Chada (Mongkut) Crown is a primary "hero" headpiece from the 2007 Broadway Asia international tour of The King and I. Designed by Academy Award-winning artist Tim Yip, the visionary behind the costumes of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, this crown is a pinnacle of his "New Orientalism" aesthetic. The piece features a towering, tiered spire, intricate gold-leafed scrollwork, and an array of hand-set rhinestones and colored theatrical jewels. Most notably, the crown includes delicate, articulated "jewelry dangles" designed to catch the stage lights with every movement, a hallmark of Yip’s high-concept theatrical craftsmanship. It is a dramatic display piece measuring 11 1/2" tall by 7 1/2" wide. See the last two screen match photos that can be found on Tim Yip's website highlihting the production, Timyipstudio.com.
As a production-worn artifact, this crown carries the "theatrical patina" of a major international tour. The visible wear—including slight variations in the gold leaf and the hand-applied structural elements—serves as an authentic fingerprint of its 2007 performance history. This is not a mass-produced replica; it is a museum-grade sculptural object crafted to the exacting standards of one of the world's most celebrated designers. Its provenance is further verified by its archival history within the prestigious Fullerton Civic Light Opera (FCLO) collection, ensuring its status as a documented piece of 21st-century Broadway history.
This crown is an exceptional investment for collectors of fine art, theatrical memorabilia, or high-end Asian decor. Whether displayed on a gallery pedestal or within a custom vitrine, it serves as a commanding statement piece that bridges the worlds of classical Thai dance tradition and Oscar-winning cinematic design.
This artifact is part of a premier private collection of Tim Yip's 'The King and I' archive. Please view my other listings to see additional screen-matched hero masks and royal headpieces from this historic 2007 production.
THE FCLO ARCHIVAL LEGACY:
This artifact is officially cataloged within the prestigious archive of the Fullerton Civic Light Opera (FCLO). For over 40 years, FCLO was a pillar of Southern California’s professional theater landscape, renowned for its massive scale and museum-quality costume department. Following the conclusion of the 2007 Broadway Asia tour, FCLO acquired the complete Tim Yip wardrobe and prop package to serve as a curated rental archive for professional productions nationwide. The presence of the internal FCLO inventory tag—hand-marked and serialized—acts as a definitive "paper trail," verifying that this piece was professionally maintained, authenticated, and preserved by one of the most respected theatrical institutions in the United States.
