A striking Japanese Showa period falcon painting originally from a traditional two-panel byōbu screen, now professionally framed as a dramatic wall panel.
The painting depicts a majestic white taka (falcon) perched on a decorated falconry stand (kayo). In Japanese art the falcon symbolizes strength, discipline, and nobility, and was historically associated with samurai culture and the aristocratic sport of falconry.
Executed in the Nihonga tradition, the work features finely layered mineral pigments on paper with exceptional detail in the feather rendering and subtle tonal gradations. The falcon’s alert posture and luminous plumage contrast beautifully against the warm neutral ground, while the geometric textile pattern and turquoise accents on the perch introduce elegant color and rhythm.
Originally part of a folding byōbu screen, the panel retains its traditional brass corner hardware and has been mounted in a simple black frame, making it ideal as statement wall art in both traditional and modern interiors.
The composition’s restrained palette and generous negative space give the work a distinctly modern decorative presence, making it particularly appealing for contemporary interiors, entryways, or above a console or sofa.
Acquired from the estate of a Southern California Asian art and ceramics collector.
