Made from papier-mâché, pigment, and paint on canvas, the piece embodies the artist’s deep engagement with texture, repetition, and light. The structured yet organic grid-like pattern reflects the influence of his grandfather, Jan Schoonhoven, while maintaining a distinct, contemporary identity. The monochromatic composition enhances the play of light and shadow across the surface, creating a dynamic visual rhythm. This piece is a testament to Schoonhoven’s dedication to material exploration and minimalist aesthetics. In excellent condition and signed and dated at the back; Jan Schoonhoven Jr 2018. Johannes Schoonhoven (born December 24, 1975, in Amsterdam), formerly known as Jan Schoonhoven Jr., is a Dutch visual artist and the grandson of renowned artist Jan Schoonhoven. Schoonhoven creates reliefs featuring fine linear structures in blue and red, with blue being the dominant color in his drawings. His reliefs, made from cardboard, papier-mâché, and optical glass, often feature blue, red, and white hues. A self-taught artist, he lives and works in Amstelveen. In March 2011, he cast one of his artworks into the sea, encased in a plastic box with a note for its finder. The following month, he sent another piece into the sky attached to balloons. His 2013 papier-mâché artwork White Wave sold for over €6,000 at Christie’s Paris in 2017 and £7,500 at Sotheby’s London. In February 2012, Schoonhoven co-founded the artist group ZERO+ with John Breed, Jan ten Have, and Rob Scholte. The name references the Dutch Nul movement, an offshoot of the international Zero movement, in which his grandfather was involved. ZERO+ shares key characteristics with Nul, such as repetition, abstraction, and the use of everyday materials. The group’s founding coincided with an exhibition in Bergen showcasing their work.
