This large-scale piece reflects vonck’s fascination with african art, evident in its dark ebonized hardwood and stylized forms. The abstract composition subtly suggests a human figure while maintaining a dynamic and sculptural presence. Vonck, known for his explorations of abstraction and constructivism, masterfully blends organic influences with modernist aesthetics. The sculpture remains in excellent original condition, having been acquired from a distinguished belgian art collection several years ago. A striking and unique piece, it embodies vonck’s ability to merge cultural inspiration with his own artistic language. Belgian painter, draftsman, and sculptor ferdinand vonck was born on august 17, 1921, in blankenberge. He showed artistic talent from an early age and studied drawing at the bruges academy before world war ii interrupted his education. Isolated in his hometown, he developed his skills as a self-taught artist, initially creating post-expressionist figurative works depicting nature and the sea. In 1952, he turned to sculpture and joined the art abstrait group, embracing abstraction. His early sculptures were polychrome wooden reliefs, later evolving into elegant, rhythmic metal and bronze structures. A pioneer of non-figurative art in flanders, he co-founded l’art construit in 1960, integrating art into architecture. Vonck received multiple awards, including the 1956 jeune peinture belge prize. In 1958, he represented belgium at the world expo. Today, his monumental works remain displayed in blankenberge’s town hall, embodying the spirit of constructivist art.
