Revolt Chair designed by Friso Kramer and manufactured by Ahrend de Cirkel in The Netherlands 1953. This rare first production Revolt chair is one of the most significant examples of Dutch industrial design from the mid-century period. This specific chair was commissioned for Technische Hogeschool Delft, who entrusted Friso Kramer and Ahrend with designing the new interior. Production began end 1957, and this particular chair comes from that very first series. Executed in a striking black and white combination with a grey lacquered frame, it remains in exceptional original condition. The Revolt chair features Kramer’s pioneering use of folded sheet steel for the frame, resulting in a light yet incredibly strong structure. The seat and backrest are made of ciranol, a durable synthetic material that was innovative for its time. The clean, functional lines and engineered clarity embody Kramer’s vision of industrial design as both utilitarian and elegant. This example carries the original TH Delft metal tag on the side, with serial number and date, marking its provenance. This model is particularly rare because few black and white versions were produced, and much of the original TH Delft furniture was destroyed when the facility burned down. The grey lacquered frame shows minimal wear consistent with age, while the seat and backrest remain beautifully preserved without cracks or chips. The Revolt chair is an enduring icon. Despite its original design dating back to 1953, it is still in production at Hay nowadays, with only slight material updates. Its functionalist purity places it in the same international design conversation as Jean Prouvé, whose Standard Chair is often shown alongside the Revolt in museum collections. Friso Kramer’s work is celebrated for its rationality, ergonomics, and timelessness. Although produced in significant numbers, the design process behind each piece was methodical and precise, resulting in objects of exceptional quality. This early Revolt chair, with its rare provenance and pristine condition, represents a crucial chapter in 20th-century design history and remains a highly collectible piece for discerning collectors. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
