A rare large-scale (23.5”) example of Washington Ledesma’s distinctive folkloric style work in the early-90s at the height of his use of his "sgraffito" etching technique.
The renowned studio ceramicist is known for his hand-crafted and etched art pottery with whimsical folk, indigenous, and anthropomorphic figures
The hand-painted narrative story is composed of figures and animals rendered with simplified anatomies, exaggerated features and stylized embellishments. Ledesma’s use of anthropomorphic indigenous symbolism – three-breasted goddesses, zoomorphic creatures, totem-like images - draws heavily from cave art and pre-Columbian pottery.
A high-gloss glaze applied over vibrant layered tones of muted ochre, green and blue showcase Ledesma's mid-century, indigenous and Latin American influences.
