wonderful galvanized silver ceramic sculpture depicting a mother with an african woman and child on her back, on a wooden base. Hand-signed by the artist with a metal nib "e. Bartoli," it is attributed to enrico bartoli, an important 19th-century italian artist. The sculpture is of good size and of very high artistic quality. Note the attention to detail, the faces, hands, and the cloth covering the woman's body. This is a truly exquisite sculpture. The work dates back to the late 19th century, and the evident patina confirms our dating.
information on the artist and/or manufacturer:
enrico bartoli (prato 1837 - 1899) was a 19th-century italian sculptor. Born in prato in 1837, he attended the technical institute of florence, a student of professor niccolò berretti; he earned a diploma for teaching drawing in high schools at a very young age. He worked for several years in the studio of the architect pesenti in florence, collaborating on the city's urban renewal. He was later called to rome to work at the institute of chalcography and was appointed professor of architecture at the academy of fine arts in parma. Enrico bartoli's main activity was in the field of architecture, but he was also a respected sculptor. He is remembered for the monument erected in 1888 to girolamo cantelli in the splendid church of the madonna della steccata in parma, a complex renaissance building with a greek cross plan. It houses numerous artistic masterpieces, including large canvases and splendid frescoes by parmigianino, and an exceptionally important series of tomb sculptures, such as the monument to count adam neipperg, maria luigia's morganatic husband, erected by lorenzo bartolini. Enrico bartoli died in 1899. This piece has an attribution mark,
