artist ambrogio antonio alciati (1878–1929) was an italian painter and one of the leading portraitists of the early 20th century in lombardy. Born in vercelli, he initially studied at the local institute of fine arts under giuseppe costa, then moved to milan (around 1889–1897) on a scholarship, attending the brera academy under vespasiano bignami and cesare tallone. In 1920, he succeeded tallone as professor of figure painting at the academy. He established himself primarily as a portraitist of milanese high society, with an elegant and impressionistic style: broad brushstrokes, soft impasto, and influences from tranquillo cremona (for the rendering of light and color), giovanni boldini (for fluidity and feminine elegance), and eugène carrière. He painted portraits of women, aristocratic and bourgeois figures, genre scenes, and a few frescoes (e.g., villa pirotta in brunate and churches in lombardy), capturing the essence of his subjects with psychological sensitivity and a romantic touch. He exhibited regularly at the permanente in milan and in other major exhibitions. His students included artists such as umberto lilloni, virginio ghiringhelli, and giuseppe novello. His works are held in museums such as the galleria d’arte moderna in milan and the museo borgogna in vercelli, as well as in private collections; they are present and valued on the market for 19th- and 20th-century italian art.
