Louisville folk artist Marvin Finn (1913-2007) began his artistic journey as a child in a family of 14, with a determination to make his own toys. Learning carving from his father, Finn continued creating wooden toys and sculpturesthroughout his life time. Finn is widely known for his sculptures of birds, specifically roosters, and other barnyard animals, inspired by his experience growing up on a farm in Alabama. His haughty, fun and imaginative wooden animal sculptures are immediatelyidentifiable. The systematic use of bold stripes, dots and dashes painted on scrap wood against a solid background in unconventional color combinations was his signature style. Marvin Finn was a familiar resident of Louisville’s artistic community for more than thirty years. The work of this beloved urban folk artist was highly sought after by collectors of toys and contemporary folk art during his lifetime and continues to be sought after by discerning collectors today. He was a living treasure in Louisville; one of a rare breed of truly self-taught visionary artists.
This original folk art sculpture is one of Marvin's fantasy frogs. It measures 10 inches high by 24 and 1/4 inches long and painted on plywood. It is signed in the bottom Finn and dated 2001. The sculpture is intact and in very good vintage condition. It is painted and mounted on imperfect wood. For example you can see the painted over imperfect lines on the plywood (see photo #16) also the side of the wood base is notched but painted over by the artist (see photo #17). As expected, using imperfect rustic materials is expected and the hallmark of folk art.
