Antique 18th C. First Period Worcester Mandarin Pattern Teapot
This substantial globular teapot showcases the refined artistry of early English porcelain. It is meticulously hand-painted in the desirable "Chinese Family" (Mandarin) pattern, featuring a charming narrative scene of a mother and child in a traditional garden setting. The figures are rendered in a vibrant palette of purple, green, and iron-red enamels, set against a creamy white ground.
Key artisanal details include:
Floral Finial: The domed lid is crowned with a hand-modeled, three-dimensional flower bud finial accented with applied green leaves.
Decorative Borders: Both the lid and the shoulder of the teapot feature sophisticated iron-red diaper borders and gilt-highlighted scalloped edges.
Chinoiserie Elements: The reverse side and the lid are further decorated with delicate floral sprays and stylized landscape elements in the classic Chinoiserie style.
Dimensions
Height: 6 inches
Width: 7 inches (handle to spout)
Note: Display stand shown in photos is not included.
Condition
Good Antique Condition. The porcelain body remains remarkably bright, and the hand-painted enamels are exceptionally well-preserved for their age. Consistent with its mid-18th-century origin, the spout has undergone a professional restoration. There is light, age-appropriate wear to the gilt highlights and minor kiln artifacts on the unglazed footrim. A small area of localized discoloration is present on the underside of the lid, a common trait in period soft-paste porcelain.
A cornerstone for any serious collection of 18th-century ceramics, this Dr. Wall Worcester teapot elegantly captures the Georgian fascination with the Orient and remains a testament to early British porcelain craftsmanship.
