Black satin-glazed terracotta candle holder or lantern by Jean Marais in Vallauris, circa 1970.
Very good condition, with a few rare chips around the openwork sections.
"Born in Cherbourg in 1913, after a turbulent and conflict-ridden school career, Jean Marais dreamed of becoming an actor. In 1937, his meeting with Jean Cocteau marked the start of his acting career and his romantic friendship with the latter.
In the 1950s, Jean Cocteau and Jean Marais frequented the potters of Vallauris during festivities organized in honor of Picasso, the famous painter turned potter. After Cocteau's death in 1963, Jean found a new medium of expression in ceramics. This piece has an attribution mark,
