A stunning and rare matched pair of Finn Juhl FD137 “Japan Series” lounge chairs, designed in 1953 and manufactured by France & Daverkosen in Denmark. Distributed through John Stuart of New York and Grand Rapids - both original dealer badges are intact on the underside, along with the original “fd / made in denmark” manufacturer’s stamp. Provenance doesn’t get better than this.
The solid teak frames are in exceptional condition, with the warm honey tones and beautiful grain characteristic of the finest Danish mid-century work. The signature cylindrical arm rests and exposed brass fittings, design details that make the Japan Series so iconic and collectible, are present and intact. The original blue wool upholstery is clean, firm, and shows no wear; these chairs have been lightly used and carefully maintained since purchase.
The Japan Series was inspired by the Miyajima water gate off the coast of Hiroshima, and the influence is unmistakable - the floating seat and back, the spare teak frame, the quiet confidence of the design. Finn Juhl is widely considered one of the great masters of Danish modernism, and the FD137 is among his most sought-after pieces.
Original pairs with intact provenance markings and unrestored upholstery in this condition are genuinely hard to find.
