Antique Neoclassical Portrait Mask of Silenus

Medium: Cast Plaster with Grey Patina
Condition: Good antique condition with surface wear consistent with age, including minor scratches, scuffs, and chips to the plaster. There is no wire or hanging apparatus on the reverse. The stand pictured is for display purposes only and is not included.
Description:
This antique plaster mask depicts Silenus, a figure from classical mythology. Often regarded as the companion to the god Dionysus, Silenus was a deity of winemaking and drunkenness, known for his wisdom—which he would only reveal when intoxicated. He is characteristically portrayed as an older satyr with a beard.
This neoclassical interpretation showcases his iconic features: a thick beard, a furrowed brow, and a wreath of grapes and ivy leaves on his head, symbolizing his connection to the vine. A grey patina (could be applied) on the front face gives the mask a stone-like, aged appearance.
