Size: 12.25”H x 14.25”D

This rare handwoven mavuku container originates from the Makhuwa people of northern Mozambique, one of the largest ethnic groups in the region. The vessel is constructed with a fitted lid and a hard midsection that allows it to split in two. The central band is overlaid with strips of bark etched with symbols, likely referencing family identity, cosmological beliefs, or ritual significance.

The basket itself showcases the technical mastery of Makhuwa weaving traditions, with carefully interlaced reeds forming geometric patterns. Containers of this type were traditionally used to safeguard food, personal valuables, or ritual objects.
