The Boys at the River is about tenderness in the open air — about being seen by sunlight instead of shadows. The nude figures stand, wade, and move through the water without self-consciousness.
The lush greens and deep forest tones create a protective canopy, almost like the land itself is sheltering them. The sky opens in soft pinks, blues, and lavenders — colors that quietly echo queerness without declaring it.
Their bodies are relaxed, unguarded. There's a sense of first freedoms here. First swims. First glances. First moments of feeling safe in your own skin.
The painting doesn't dramatize their sexuality; it normalizes their joy.
