Large Biomorphic Abstract Stone Sculpture “Driftwood” Signed E.F. 1994 – Organic Modern Studio Art on Oak Base
This striking hand-carved stone sculpture titled “Driftwood” is a beautiful example of late 20th-century biomorphic abstract sculpture. The piece is signed with the monogram E.F. and dated 1994, and features a flowing organic composition with open negative spaces reminiscent of naturally weathered driftwood or erosion-formed stone.
The sculpture is carved from a natural stone believed to be serpentine or soapstone, both materials traditionally used by studio sculptors for their rich mineral patterns and ability to achieve smooth sculptural surfaces. The stone displays subtle gray-green coloration with warm rust-colored mineral banding across the upper surface, giving the piece depth and visual movement.
The elongated horizontal form emphasizes balance and motion through the use of negative space and curved surfaces. This sculptural language reflects the influence of modernist sculptors such as Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, who pioneered organic abstract forms in stone during the twentieth century.
The sculpture rests on a custom oak plinth base, which is hand-carved on the underside and inscribed:
“OAK BASE
DRIFTWOOD
’94”
The monogram E.F. also appears carved into the base, indicating the base was likely made or prepared by the sculptor specifically for this work.
With its neutral tones and flowing organic silhouette, this piece integrates beautifully into modern, contemporary, organic modern, or mid-century inspired interiors. It works perfectly on a console table, credenza, shelf, or pedestal display.

ARTIST INFORMATION
The sculpture is signed with the monogram E.F. and dated 1994, suggesting it was created by a studio sculptor working in the tradition of modern biomorphic abstraction.
During the late twentieth century many sculptors created organic forms carved from natural stone such as serpentine, marble, and soapstone. Inspired by artists like Isamu Noguchi and Henry Moore, these sculptors emphasized natural movement, balance, and negative space in their work.
While the exact identity of the sculptor remains unidentified, the quality of the carving and the integrated plinth base indicate the work of a skilled studio artist active in the 1990s.
