This is a piece of wallpaper that was salvaged from an historically important building erected in 1703 and demolished in about 1940. The building, called the Parker castle, was in Perth Amboy, New Jersey which was at the time the capitol of Pre-Revolutionary East New Jersey. In its early years the house was visited by such dusinguished people as William Franklin, who was estranged from his father, Benjamin Franklin, because of his continuing loyalty to the British Crown.
It is my understanding that the outlines were block printed and the design hand painted with tempera or similar paint. The piece is in remarkably good condition for its age and has been matted and framed with archival matterials. Google Lens indicates the design depicts the entry gate of a monumental European palace.

The edges were torn to straighten the piece for framing. There are 3 sections of tears along the side edge, each about an inch long where the tears, parallel to the vertical edges of the image, approach the image without encroaching on the image. I have collected pictures of the Parker Castle at several stages of its long life and compiled quite a number of written history pieces. So the provenance is very well documented and would be shared. less
