This remarkable square coffee table is a true masterpiece of Bossche School craftsmanship and proportion. The architectural precision of its construction is immediately striking. The base is tapered, giving the table a sculptural quality, while the tabletop subtly thickens toward the center, creating a sense of weight and balance that anchors the design in the space. This careful shaping elevates the piece far beyond a functional object. It is a study in proportion and volume. The copper nails, arranged in a highly disciplined pattern, contribute to the visual rhythm and almost transform the surface into a work of art. Finished in a warm cream color with a soft yellow undertone, the table exudes a quiet yet powerful presence. It stands as a rare and unique piece within our collection, representing the refined language of Bossche School furniture at its most elegant. The entire interior of the house had the same finish as this table on some accents. Fons Vermeulen was an accomplished architect who worked closely within the intellectual and architectural circle surrounding Dom Hans van der Laan. He studied under Van der Laan at the Architectenkring ‘s‑Hertogenbosch, where many of the leading architects of the Bossche School were trained. Deeply committed to the proportional system of the plastic number, Vermeulen integrated these principles with a personal sense of precision and refinement. While Van der Laan laid the theoretical foundation, Vermeulen translated these ideas into built projects and objects with exceptional sensitivity. This table, in very good condition, reflects both his mastery of proportion and his architectural discipline. It is an exceptional and collectible piece of Dutch design history, equally at home in a private interior or a museal setting. Provenance: Private residence, Lomm, Netherlands 1982. See less
