tchavdar iliev – “oryx” | unique polished bronze sculpture, 1990s
a powerful and highly refined polished bronze sculpture of an oryx, created in the 1990s by bulgarian-dutch sculptor tchavdar iliev. This dynamic and sculptural composition is mounted on a black marble base and exemplifies iliev’s mastery of movement, balance, and tension.
the antelope’s elegant, elongated horns sweep forward in a bold gesture, while the sharply faceted planes of the head and neck create a striking interplay between abstraction and figuration. The sculpture reveals a constantly shifting silhouette depending on the viewing angle—an intentional and defining element of iliev’s work. Built around a vertical axis, the crossing contour lines generate a palpable sense of energy and poise.
the bronze is gemonogrammeerd with a “.t” and bears the foundry mark art casting belgium, underscoring its authenticity and quality of casting. Iliev’s sculptures are created with meticulous attention to perfection and are often unique or highly limited works.

about the artist
born in 1950 in montana, northwest bulgaria, iliev graduated in 1976 from the academy of fine arts in sofia, specializing in monumental sculpture. In his early career, he was commissioned by the bulgarian government as an art advisor and realized several large-scale public monuments.
since 1990, iliev has been based in the netherlands (amersfoort). His work is represented in private collections and major corporate collections including centraal beheer, achmea, fbto, avero, and staal bankiers. Movement, balance, and tension are central themes in his oeuvre, expressed through the abstraction of figurative elements into restrained, powerful lines.
in 2016, he received the prestigious van ommeren de voogt prize for his sculpture “steenbok,” further affirming his position as a sculptor of international standing.
an exceptional and collectible 1990s bronze—compact in scale yet monumental in presence—ideal for refined modern, minimalist, or corporate interiors.
