The elegant drapery, large stylised wings and hieratic stance are directly inspired by the “Retour d’Égypte” movement of the early 19th century, when Napoleonic campaigns brought Egyptian motifs into Empire and neoclassical interiors.
The arm extends gracefully from a swan – another ancient symbol of beauty and transcendence – creating a rare and theatrical decorative piece.
Originally designed for candlelight, it has been adapted for electricity in the 20th century, but is easily used with a candle sleeve for an authentic look.
