The Baule people of the Ivory Coast used ram masks in secular, public performances. Realistically carved, and wonderfully decorated, they were designed to draw attention and enhance the festival atmosphere. The white on black of this example provides eye-catching contrast, while the naturally twisted horns add excitement and texture. Playing with multiple levels, colors, and negative spaces, the creator succeeded in capturing the ram's spirit.
Mask is affixed with a d-ring for display as a wall hanging sculpture.
