This chest of drawers with a grey and white marble top dates from around 1900, during the transition from late Historicism to early Art Nouveau. It combines traditional cabinet construction with understated, formally defined decorative elements. The balanced proportions of the two-door base with its continuous marble top and original brass fittings lend the piece a cohesive and stylish overall appearance. Historical context: Chests of drawers with marble tops were a standard feature of middle-class living and dining rooms around 1900, where they served as sideboards, china cabinets, or serving pieces. The marble top protected the wooden surface from moisture and heat and simultaneously underscored the prestigious status of such furniture in upscale households. The combination of solid wood, natural stone, and brass fittings reflected the craftsmanship of the era, in which furniture was increasingly prefabricated industrially but still assembled and finished using traditional methods.
Features - Two-part marble top with profiled edges - Original brass fittings with decorative rosettes and escutcheons Design The body follows a clearly structured, rectangular form with slightly recessed plinth feet. The doors feature large, framed panels with subtly curved decorative appliqués in the upper corners, reflecting a restrained approach to the Art Nouveau style. The horizontal line of the marble top emphasizes the width of the piece and structures the overall appearance into clearly defined planes. Function Formerly used as a sideboard or china cabinet in the dining room or parlor, it is now suitable as a sideboard in the dining room, hallway, or living room, for example, for storing dishes, textiles, or documents.
