This elegant French chest of drawers dates from around 1850 and exemplifies the combination of elegant body form and vibrant veneer typical of the mid-19th century. The clearly structured front with four Louis-Philippe-style drawers and the chamfered marble top are accentuated by the richly grained walnut veneer. Historical Context: Chests of drawers of this type were standard furnishings in bourgeois homes during the 19th century and served as storage furniture in bedrooms or reception rooms. The combination of a veneered body and a marble top reflects the increased demands for prestige and durability, as marble was valued for its easy-care, resilient surface and also created a formal separation from the wall.
Features: - Four drawers stacked one above the other, the bottom one significantly larger - Precisely fitted marble top with chamfered corners. Design: Formally, the chest of drawers stands between late Biedermeier and early Historicism, combining a clearly cubic form with a pronounced veneer pattern. Characteristic features include the calm base, the profiled framing of the front, and the mirrored grain pattern, which structures the surface without over-ornamenting it. Function: Originally, this chest of drawers served for the organized storage of linens and personal belongings in bedrooms or dressing rooms. Today, it is used equally as storage furniture in living areas or as a discreet standalone piece, with the marble top providing a durable surface.
