An imposing and architecturally composed table lamp model “hermes,” designed by angelo brotto for esperia in the 1970s. The name refers to the mythological greek god hermes — messenger of the gods — a poetic and powerful title chosen by the manufacturer, in line with the era’s tradition of mythological model names. This example is preserved as new old stock, directly from esperia’s warehouse, never used and retaining its original tag. The composition is built around a sculptural s-shaped wooden block (15 × 8 × 39.5 h cm), rising from a compact base (15 × 8 cm). With overall dimensions of 25 × 20 cm depth and 85.5 cm in height, the lamp has a commanding vertical presence and a refined architectural balance. At the heart of the structure sits a hand-worked brass sphere, entirely sculpted and pierced by hand. Its surface is organic and irregular, almost molten in texture, allowing light to filter through the perforations. Above, a circular aperture set into the upper brass plate allows illumination to fall directly onto the carved sphere, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. The reference to hermes feels particularly appropriate here — light travels downward like a divine signal, activating the sculpted core of the piece. The brass detailing is both structural and decorative: – a polished brass top plate with circular opening. – a lower brass support element embedded within the wooden cut-out. – a vertical brass stem with refined cylindrical fittings. – four solid brass feet beneath the base (height 1 cm), subtly lifting the structure and enhancing its lightness. The lamp is crowned by a large rectangular shade (25 × 20 × 40 h cm), whose clean geometry balances the expressive intensity of the base. Illumination and technical details the lamp features four light points: – two e27 sockets positioned within the shade for primary illumination. – two e14 sockets integrated into the lower brass structure, enhancing the sculptural presence of the hand-worked sphere. This dual lighting system allows light to cascade from above through the circular aperture while simultaneously generating a warm architectural glow within the structure. Wired for european standards (220–240v). Fully functional in the united states (110–120v); however, due to the voltage difference, the light output will be slightly softer. The lamp will be shipped with a plug adapter. For permanent installation or optimal performance in the us, professional rewiring to local standards is recommended. An exceptional and rare example of angelo brotto’s synthesis of art and design — where mythological reference, craftsmanship, and material richness converge into an object of striking presence. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
