Dimensions: height … Read more This large Japanese ranma from the 1960s is an exceptionally decorative transom panel with deep, openwork wood carving.

Dimensions: height 44 cm, width 235.5 cm, depth 7 cm. Weight: 12 kg.

At the centre, a strong, twisting trunk grows into a branching network, richly covered with blossoms and buds. On one side, delicate bamboo leaves appear, adding lightness and rhythm to the composition. The carving is executed in sukashi-bori (openwork relief carving): light passes through the cut-out areas, while the layered depth creates a striking play of shadow. Because of this depth, the panel reads almost like a sculpture, especially up close.

This piece is also double-sided, meaning it can be beautifully displayed from both sides. It works not only as a long horizontal wall panel above a sofa or sideboard, but also as a freestanding see-through element or room divider in an open-plan setting.

Traditionally, ranma were installed above sliding doors to let light and air pass through while elegantly defining a space. Today, this panel works as a serene, unique interior accent with real craftsmanship and character.

Condition: good. Due to the fine detailing, a few small elements may be missing here and there, but this is not distracting and suits the age and delicate nature of the carving. See less
