A Delightful Early 18th Century, George I Period, Quilted Elm Lowboy, Or Side Table, Of Superb Untouched Colour And Patina Throughout, The Exceptionally Well Figured Top Over Long & Two Short Drawers, With Original Brass Handles, Raised On Very Elegant Cabriole Legs With Pointed Pad Feet To Front And Back.
Throughout the first half of the 18th century any form of side table was generally referred to as a lowboy and nearly always constructed from rich, attractive solid timbers due to the plentiful supply of these at the time.
This is an exceptionally good example of its type, with a superbly figured top, which continues throughout the rest of the piece creating real elegance in combination with the lovely shaped frieze and elegant cabriole legs.
It has certainly aged well retaining a lovely warm colour and also retains its original brass handles, which is quite rare indeed for a piece like this.
There are of course plenty of historic lumps, bumps and scrapes and signs of age, but nothing which is out of keeping for an item this old. Indeed we would say the condition is actually very good and that clearly this elm lowboy has been well loved, but also well used throughout its life.
Quilted Elm is really quite rare and rarely found. It is identified due to its almost three dimensional wavy grain pattern and shimmering effect on the woods surface. It is incredibly decorative and lends itself very naturally to stunning visual patterns within the surface, especially after many years of use and love.
As with all items which we offer for sale this quilted elm side table has been inspected in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers and received a natural wax polish to ensure it is in its best possible condition and ready to be placed straight into the home before being offered for sale.
