Offered is a rare and authentic set of three antique Japanese Kutani-yaki (九谷焼) porcelain cups and saucers featuring a true lithophane (透かし絵, sukashie) portrait in the bottom of each cup. When held to light, a finely modeled female portrait (often referred to as a “bijin” or “geisha” image) appears in three-dimensional relief—created by variations in porcelain thickness, not by paint or decal.
Each saucer is hand-painted in classic Kutani style with a refined Mt. Fuji landscape including a wooden arched bridge, lakeside dwellings, pine trees, and cherry blossoms, all executed in traditional overglaze enamels of cobalt blue, emerald green, soft rose, and iron brown, with gold gilt rims and handles.
Mark:
Each piece bears the red studio seal 九谷造 (Kutani-zō) on the base, indicating production in the Kutani region of Ishikawa Prefecture. The calligraphy style and enameling technique place this set in the late Taishō to early Shōwa period (circa 1930–1950).
Dimensions (approx.):
• Cup diameter: 3 3/4 in (9.5cm)
• Saucer diameter: 5.5 in (14 cm)
This is a genuine period set, not a modern reproduction or tourist souvenir. A highly collectible example of pre-war Kutani studio porcelain with true lithophane craftsmanship.
