Elevate your collection with this rare 1926 Art Deco sculpture by the renowned Swedish-American artist Peter David Edstrom (1873–1938). This striking and heavy piece features a stylized nude female form integrated into a monolithic, block-like base, embodying the sleek Modernist aesthetic of the roaring twenties.
Executed in a deep, dark-glazed ceramic, the work showcases Edstrom’s mastery of fluid anatomical lines contrasted against rigid geometric forms. This specific design is signed and dated "Edstrom 26" on the base, placing it during the artist's prolific tenure in Los Angeles, where he famously served as a founder of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
Artist Bio:
Peter David Edstrom was a pivotal figure in the 20th-century sculpture scene, training at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts and in Paris under Injalbert. A member of Gertrude Stein’s inner circle in Paris, he later settled in California, where his work was celebrated for its psychological depth and modern form. His sculptures are currently held in the permanent collections of the National Museum in Stockholm and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
Style this Art Deco treasure atop a stack of vintage art books for a curated look, or utilize the flat, hollow base to wall-mount it as a striking architectural relief.
