SELMA GUBIN
Kiev, Ukraine - New York, USA, b. 1903, d. 1974
Selma Gubin was born in Kiev, Ukraine, and settled with her family in New York in 1908.

Even though few women were successful in the city's contemporary art world, her father encouraged her pursuit of formal art training. After studying art at Hunter College, Gubin joined the Art Students League in 1924, where faculty members Raphael Soyer, Philip Evergood, and Chaim Gross influenced her still developing style.

Although obliged to work at a variety of office jobs in order to support herself, Gubin remained an active member of the New York Artists Equity Association and the National Association of Women Artists and exhibited widely throughout her lifetime. Miss Gubin studied at the Art Students League, where she received a fellowship,
and with John Sloan, Raphael Soyer and Boardman Robinson.
Gubin has had collections in numerous prestigious institutions including the Library of Congress, the New York Public Library, & the National Museum of Jerusalem, just to name a few. See less
