Ex-Museum Pre-Columbian Chimú Blackware Anthropomorphic Vessel with Handle
Northern Coast, Peru, c. 900–1470 CE
Ceramic (reduction-fired blackware)
Dimensions: 5.75 in. H x 4.75 in. D
This vessel is an example of the blackware ceramic tradition of the Chimú culture, which dominated the northern coast of Peru until the Inca conquest in the late fifteenth century. Chimú potters were highly skilled in reduction firing, a process that deprived the kiln of oxygen and produced the distinctive black, burnished surfaces for which their wares are renowned.
The vessel is modeled with an anthropomorphic visage integrated into the rim. A dotted pattern on the body, suggesting both ornamental and possibly symbolic significance within Chimú visual culture. The loop handle emerging from the rear provides structural balance and hints at the vessel’s practical as well as ritual use.
Condition: Surface wear consistent with age and long-term use. Chip to the underside of the base. No evidence of modern restoration.
