Arnegger's command of color and perspective are second to none and the subject matter is principally focused on Italian and Alpine landscapes. What can one say about that except; what's not to like?
Arnegger's career in Italy takes an interesting turn at the start of the first world war when he was notified he was eligible for the draft, being an Austrian citizen. Not exactly a pacifist, but not wanting to fight against the country he had grown to love, he sent sent death notices to Munich and Vienna newspapers notifying these respective cities where he had studied art, that he had died in an Alpine climbing accident. WWI took a tremendous toll among artists of a certain age among all sides of combat but Alois Arnegger lived to paint another 50 years the landscapes he loved. Canvas dimensions are 40 x 1 x 49 in. unframed. The frame its' self is 46 x 2 x 54 in. is gilded and hand carved and dates from about the time of the painting, c. 1920's. See less
